TO ALL STAFF COVERING PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE:

In the interest of creating a consistent message and timely filing to meet deadlines, all staff need to adhere to the following suggested story guidelines:

For all citizen interviews and photo shoots (special attn Pedestrian Pete):
  • Romney Supporters: we need more older, white males & people who look rich.
  • Obama Supporters: we need more young, attractive women and minorities
  • Anti-Obama Protesters: if Tea Party, focus on angry signs, no minorities, in-depth interviews not needed
  • Anti-Romney Protesters: focus on victim signs, minorities, no probing questions, mute any violent chants
  • Press: - fill in as needed with interviews of other journalists, try and get major mainstream media personalities. AVOID FoxNews and all Bloggers. Remember, bloggers are not real journalists.
Suggested questions for post-debate interviews:
  • Given tonight's performance, do you think the election is over for Romney?
  • In contrast to the President's calm demeanor and thoughtful answers, do you think Romney came across looking more angry, or more confused?
  • Do you think Romney can survive another debate performance like the one tonight?
  • Given the pre-debate lowering of expectations, were you surprised at how absolutely fantastic President Obama did in his very first debate in over four years?
  • As the Romney Campaign (manager, spokesman, debate coach, etc.) is it really possible to recover from a night like this, given the short time left to move independent voters?
  • As the Obama Campaign (manager, spokesman, debate coach, etc.) do you think any more campaigning by the President is needed? Do you think more debates are really necessary?
  • Do you think it's appropriate for news organizations to call the election for President Obama right now, or should they wait until voting has begun in all states?
Remember, be polite and keep the questions relevant to the debate issues. Absolutely no questions about Fast & Furious or Libya, or the economy. Try and get a scoop on whether Romney should release more tax returns. And have fun!
