Lost Ski Areas Book Project Impacts PPPS Production in 2014 - An Apology to Our Readers

Caryn at Vail in 1962
PPPS (Littleton)—As we wrap up 2014 at the Pundit Pete Press Service, we must offer an apology to our readers.

You see, two of our most loyal readers (and sometimes contributors), Citizen Caryn and Citizen Pete, launched into a fascinating book project about the history of lost ski areas in Colorado.

So many PPPS staff members became consumed with helping Caryn and Pete with their research, however, that they almost completely neglected their Press Service duties.

(US Forest Service photo)
The result was a decidedly downhill decline in the number of PPPS stories posted, from 47 in 2013 to only 23 in 2014.

The good news is that, with the help of the PPPS staff and many others around the state, Caryn and Pete were able to publish this absolutely fabulous book, Lost Ski Areas of Colorado's Front Range and Northern Mountains.

We encourage those with a love of skiing or history to purchase copies online from the History Press (where Caryn & Pete will get a larger royalty).

Copies are also available online from Amazon or Barnes & Noble, and at bookstores throughout Colorado, including: The Tattered Cover; the Book Bar; and Off the Beaten Path in Steamboat Springs.

President Obama's Immigration Reform Action - What It Means

PPPS (Littleton)—In anticipation of President Obama's announcement and pending executive order on Immigration Reform we asked our talented graphic artist, Pixel Pete, to summarize the President's action from the perspective of an average citizen.

Update: Our crack research staff found these quotes in Pundit Pete Quotes which relate to our President's exercise of executive powers.

A Tale of Two Elections

PPPS (Littleton)—In comparing the anticipated outcome of next week's election to the last one in 2012, we are reminded of quotes by two giants of American history and culture:

A Tale of Two Elections

On the 2012 Presidential Election:

"It's easier to fool people, than to convince them they have been fooled." —Mark Twain

On the 2014 Midterm Election:

"Whenever our affairs go obviously wrong, the good sense of the people will interpose and set them to rights."

Does Dr Ben Carson Face Minority Backlash for Stepping Out From His Hospital Hood?

Dr. Ben Carson & Pundit Pete
PPPS (Denver)—PPPS Chief Correspondent, Pundit Pete, caught up with conservative brain surgeon Dr. Ben Carson after his speech at the Western Conservative Summit last night.

After exchanging pleasantries and a handshake, Pundit Pete got down to the business of a true journalist by asking the type of hard hitting question that the mainstream media would never ask.

Pete's question addresses the sensitive subject of minority backlash as Dr. Carson steps out from his hospital hood into the tough world of politics.

You will be surprised by Dr. Carson's answer.

Border News: Obama May Have Mocked the Moat, But Did It Get Built?

PPPS (Ft. Hancock, TX)—On May 10, 2011, on his first trip to visit the border near El Paso, President Obama declared the border more secure than ever, and then went on to mock GOP opponents for wanting to move the goal posts all the time.

He said "Maybe they'll want a moat. Maybe they'll want alligators in the moat."

But PPPS has learned that the Obama administration, in their unceasing effort to secure the border, has gone on to make a mockery of the President's mock, and has actually constructed a 15-mile long border moat along the Rio Grande between Fort Hancock and Esperanza, TX (about 40 miles southeast of El Paso).

Here is an aerial view of the new border moat obtained from Google Earth.

Readers are encouraged to check out the entire 15-mile length on Google Earth.

West end coordinates:
31°14'54"N, 105°50'16"W

East end coordinates:

PPPS has not yet confirmed whether there are any alligators in the moat.

Breaking: President Obama Resolves Border Crisis With Executive Order

PPPS (Tegucigalpa)—Through unnamed sources at the U.S. Embassy in Honduras, chief Latin American correspondent Pedro Pete has just learned that President Obama today signed a new Executive Order which clarifies U.S. immigration policy involving refugees from Central America and other regions. The President briefly diverted Secretary Kerry from his successful peace mission in the Middle East to solicit input on the new policy from several Latin American leaders.

Old Homeland Security Logo
Although a formal copy of the executive order will not be made available until sometime after the November elections, some of the new policies are already being implemented.

Included in the order are provisions to streamline processing of refugees and to make the border crossing a less intimidating experience for undocumented immigrants, many of whom carry the stigma of their entry status long after they have taken up permanent residence in the U.S.
More welcoming enforcement.

Words like illegal, alien, non-citizen and unlawful are being removed from the border enforcement lexicon, and replaced with more welcoming terms.

Perhaps the most visible change will be evident almost immediately, as the traditional U.S. Department of Homeland logo, which appears on caps and uniforms of several enforcement agencies, is replaced with this new, more modern design.

Related Update: Following criticism from both Democrats and Republicans in Texas concerning the border crisis, and after learning about Ascarate Golf Course in El Paso, President Obama has agreed to alter his upcoming Texas fundraising trip to include a visit to the border.

President Obama's 10-Point Crisis Management Plan

PPPS (Washington)—In a world of seemingly out-of-control events it is comforting to know that our President has developed and follows a well thought out crisis management plan to solve both domestic and international problems as they arise.

Our Chief White House Correspondent, Political-Beat Pete, was able to obtain a copy of President Obama's plan from his sources on the White House staff. This 10-Point Crisis Management Plan is part of the President's larger 2014 Year of Action which he articulated during his 2014 State of the Union Speech.

Crisis Management - President Obama's 10-Point Plan

Step 1 - Manufacture a crisis to avoid discussion about actual problems that the majority of citizens care about and want fixed.
Step 2 - Use phone to encourage mainstream media friends and other Democrats to talk about the "crisis".
Step 3 - Demonize and humiliate people who point out that the "crisis" is not a real crisis. Give their names to the IRS.
Step 4 - Use pen to create new government policy or to change or ignore an old policy (sometimes called a law) to solve the "crisis".
Step 5 - Ignore warnings from advisers and political opposition (Tea Party) about obvious disastrous consequences of Step 4.
Step 6 - Ignore real data from government agencies and outside experts about mounting disastrous consequences of Step 4.
Step 7 - Read in news about Step 4 consequences. Express shock and outrage. Declare a new crisis.
Step 8 - Do nothing for a while (play golf or pool).
Step 9 - Use pointer to blame Congress (and Tea Party) for causing the new crisis and for not caring about fixing the new (or the old) crisis.
Step 10 - Repeat Step 1 or go to Step 4 (optional shortcut).

Will President Obama Be Able to Mend Fences With Veterans?

PPPS (Washington, DC)—With new stories of delays in healthcare benefits for our nation's veterans being exposed almost every day, it is comforting to know that at least once in the past five years the Obama administration was able to respond quickly in a way which impacted veterans.

The Week In Tweets

PPPS (Littleton)—Given the warm spring weather here in Colorado, and the noticeable absence of staff on Friday, we decided sum up the week's news with tweets.

Last week ended, and this week began, with an awkward video and a recorded conversation, both of which touched upon the subject of race. Reactions were swift in the national media and from certain sectors of society, such as the long abused millionares in the National Basketball Association.

By the end of the week, however, passions seemed to have sorted themselves out a bit, and we came across this interesting set of tweets, the first of which we recommend as a good conversation starter .....

and this one we recommend to our readers as guide to help interpret news involving this sensitive subject.

Of course, being the end of the month, economic news was bound to work its way into the national conversation. The news was not good.

On Wednesday, it was revealed that first quarter 2014 GDP growth was a pitiful 0.1 percent, and on Friday, employment figures indicated the worst labor participation rate since 1978.
However, even in the midst of disappointing news, there is usually a bright spot.

A few news organizations tried to raise questions about a certain memo associated with a big non-story, which had long ago been put to bed. It caused a minor stir in the White House Press Room and the most uncomfortable few minutes for Press Secretary Jay Carney since the last time Citizen Pete was there.

But, the issue was quickly resolved, as indicated by this tweet.

As the week ended, there were rumors that the Republicans, in a desperate attempt to keep the Benghazi story alive, were going to commission some sort of investigation.

We are confident, however, that next week, the news will return to more comfortable subjects like Obamacare and politics, as evidenced by this end-of-week tweet.

Pete Quote of the Day - April 23

PPPS (Littleton)—Because our dear leader and CEO, Pundit Pete, overflows with wisdom, we thought we would begin posting quotes on a daily basis.

Having thus preserved Pete's pearls for posterity, maybe he'll stop repeating them to the staff over and over and over again.

Putin vs. Palin - A Sign of Things to Come?

Oops, He Did It Again - Pete Poses Tough Obamacare Question to Jay Carney

PPPS (Washington, DC)—Once again, Citizen Pete, posing as Chief White House Correspondent Political-Beat Pete, asked a tough Obamacare question to White House Press Secretary Jay Carney at the end of yesterday's White House Press Briefing.

This was not Pete's first time at the press briefing rodeo, having visited almost one year ago to ask Secretary Carney about the president's lavish vacations at taxpayer expense.

But this time, Pete asked about something a little more personal, the Affordable Care Act. Pete's wife, Citizen Caryn, had her health insurance policy canceled because of the law, and in order to avoid the security risks associated with the Obamacare exchanges, and find a plan in which she could still keep he doctor of many years, she now pays about double her previous premium. If it were not for the extra $3,600 per year out of the family budget due to Obamacare, Pete might make more frequent trips to the White House press room.

Here is the transcript:
White House Press Briefing: March 10, 2014

PETE:    Jay, one more question from Colorado?
MR. CARNEY:  Colorado, what do you got?
PETE:   Okay.  I just wanted to follow up on that one about Obama -- well, the Affordable Care Act.  And you mentioned that the Republicans are giving this pitch to, I guess, repeal the bill.  And so my question --
MR. CARNEY:  Surely your reporting reflects that.
PETE:  What’s that?
MR. CARNEY:  I’m not misstating --
PETE:  No, no, no, it was the reasons you gave that I wanted to ask you about.  And the last time I was here, I asked you a question and you didn’t really answer it, so I hope I’ll have better luck this time.  (Laughter.)
MR. CARNEY:  I think he’s waiting for his -- have you got the camera on him?  Go ahead.
PETE: And I saw you using notes, so I’m going to use mine as well.
MR. CARNEY:  Go for it.
PETE:   When the law was first debated and passed -- and we’re talking about the Affordable Care Act -- the polls showed a majority of the people were not in favor of that, and yet it was pushed through.  And so in terms of this pitch, the President continued to pitch to get it passed using statements like “you can keep your plan.”  And, by the way, I know that’s not true because my wife lost her insurance because of the Affordable Care Act -- that you can --
MR. CARNEY:  What’s your question, sir?
PETE:  Well, I’m getting to it.
MR. CARNEY:  Okay.
PETE:  We don't get here very often from out in middle country, so when you get your chance, you got to ask.
MR. CARNEY:  You’re welcome.  Sure.
PETE:  Okay.  So anyway, the President’s pitch was that you can keep your plan, that your costs will go down, and I know that not to be true.  So my question is:  Will the President accede to the greater majority of Americans now who want it repealed?
MR. CARNEY:  Well, actually that's not --
PETE:  Why won’t he listen to the American people?
MR. CARNEY:  You obviously haven’t seen the data because the majority of Americans do not in any poll want it repealed.  The majority supports fixing it and improving it, not repealing it.  I would ask you to check your data.
Secondly, the President made that pitch.  Republicans in Congress fought it tooth and nail.  It went to the Supreme Court.  The Supreme Court upheld it.  It was the principal argument in a presidential election.  The President won reelection.
And again, Republicans are free to make the repeal argument. My point was simply that when you go to individuals and you ask them, do you want quality, affordable health insurance, or do you want the insurance company to tell you that you’re not going to get coverage for that condition you have because the fine print says you can't.  In fact, your sister, we’re going to charge her double even though you have identical medical histories because she’s a woman --
PETE:  Well, my wife is getting charged double now because she lost her insurance.
MR. CARNEY:  Well, again, I don't know the circumstances with your wife.  And what I can tell you is that the Affordable Care Act provides quality, affordable health insurance to millions of people.  They are -- million are --
PETE:  But that's not true.  More people have lost their insurance because of the act right now than have been -- didn't have insurance and have signed up.  That is a fact.
MR. CARNEY:  Okay, well, you’re entitled to your facts, sir. What I can tell you is that you and others who want to campaign on repeal are welcome to.
What I’m saying is that repeal for millions of Americans is not a good option and for all the reasons that I enumerated.
Thank you all very much.

Bedtime Stories from CPAC - Sarah Palin Style

Still clip from official CPAC video.
PPPS (National Harbor, MD)--Governor Sarah Palin woke up some sleepy conservatives yesterday, even as she told a bedtime story to close out the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

Her speech was peppered with great Palin-style one-liners, and perhaps a smidgeon of sarcasm, as she brought the audience repeatedly to their feet.

Recalling Senator Ted Cruz's reading to his daughters on the Senate floor from Dr. Zeus' Green Eggs and Ham, Palin added a few new verses:
I do not like this Uncle Sam.
I do not like his healthcare scam.

I do not like these dirty crooks,
or how they lie and cook the books.

I do not like when Congress steals.
I do not like their crony deals.

I do not like this spy'n man.
I do not like 'Oh yes we can.'

I do not like this spending spree.
We're smart. We know.  There's nothing free.

I do not like reporters' smug replies,
when I complain about their lies.

I do not like this kind of hope.
And we won't take it....
View from the Press Gallery as Sarah Palin speaks.
After referring to President Obama's remaining time in office as "the end of an error," Palin said he is now the "lamest of lame ducks."

She then went on to lambast President Obama for his "wobbly" and weak foreign policy, in particular towards Russia and President Vladimir Putin's expansionist incursion into Ukraine. But then, she quickly apologized, stating "I'm sorry. But really, I'm probably being too hard on the President. After all, who could'a seen this coming?"

But Palin's pokes were not exclusively reserved for Obama and other Democrats. Speaking of the 2010 election, which brought the Republicans back to power in the House of Representatives and in state legislatures and governors' mansions across the land, Palin reminded some in the GOP establishment that "you didn't build that........the Tea Party did!" and implied that the broom that will be sweeping in 2014 may pick up some dust on both sides of the aisle.

It was a memorable speech, and we have to admit that we caught some of the normally fair, balanced and objective PPPS staff applauding or standing at times.

Here is Sarah Palin's full speech. For those with a short attention span, or just looking for a bedtime story, that starts at about minute 12:00. Enjoy.

Pundit Pete at CPAC

PPPS (National Harbor, MD)--Once again, the Pundit Pete Press Service has been covering the annual Conservative Political Action Conference being held at National Harbor, just south of our nation's capitol. And this time, our leader, Pundit Pete, has been in attendance.

Although often mobbed by his own admirers as he moves around the venue, Pete has managed to connect with some of the "rock stars" of the conservative movement and has secured a few photo opportunities. In many cases, Pete even waived his usual fee for having his photo taken.

Our CEO and dear leader, Pundit Pete, offered to personally escort the lucky 100,000th visitor and a guest on an all-expenses-paid trip to Hawaii.

Unfortunately, our social media director, #PoundSign Pete, dozed off at the exact moment the ticker turned over, and we were unable to identify the lucky visitor.

We are hoping that Pundit Pete will select a staff member instead, to accompany him on the trip.

In any case, Pete promised to send a postcard.

Tea Party Launched On This Day Five Years Ago

PPPS (Littleton)—Our loyal reader Citizen Pete, reminded us that it was on this day, February 19, five years ago, the Tea Party movement was launched with an on-air rant from Rick Santelli.

Citizen Pete also reminded us that the Tea Party movement was initially a response to President Obama's first major legislative initiative, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act or "Stimulus Bill", which was passed by Congress on February 13, 2009 after only being available for review by American citizens for a few hours in the middle of the night.

The bill was quickly dubbed the "Porkulus Bill" by citizen activists and a protest was organized in Seattle on February 16, 2009 by a local blogger named Liberty Bell. The protest was promoted nationally by Michelle Malkin and a follow-up protest was quickly organized to coincide with President Obama's visit to Denver to formally sign the Stimulus Bill on February 17, 2009. Citizen Pete got to that protest in Denver just as it was ending, and vowed to come back if there was ever another.

And the rest is history, except for the part that is yet to be written.

A Note to Karl Rove

Karl Rove & Pundit Pete 2012
PPPS (Littleton)—One of our loyal readers, Citizen Pete, pointed out an article about Karl Rove posted at the Breitbart Big Government web page, and responded with a note of his own. And, although we don't normally acknowledge any news items from competing news organizations, we found Citizen Pete's response so compelling that we made an exception.

Here is the original article by Tony Lee at Breitbart:

And here is the note we received from Citizen Pete:
Dear Pundit Pete:
You need to pay attention to this article I spotted at Breitbart.
I know you and Karl Rove are great pals, but you may want to rethink that relationship.
Ever since he started diss'n the Tea Party, his fortunes have gone south.
Maybe you could send him this sign to help straighten him out.
Your friend,
Citizen Pete

President Obama's New Plan For Governing

PPPS (Washington)—On Tuesday, during his State of the Union speech before a joint session of Congress and a vast television audience of subjects throughout the country, President Obama articulated a new plan for governing during the upcoming "2014 Year of Action".

Our Chief White House Correspondent, Political-Beat Pete, who attended the State of the Union speech as a guest of former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, summed up the president's plan succinctly:
And, as President Obama is proud to point out, the plan comes "without a smidgen of corruption."

State of the Union - When A President Speaks The Truth

PPPS (Washington)—In the daily life of our nation, no speech is more consequential, more riveting, or more hopeful than when our president goes before Congress and the American people to report on the State of the Union. It is truly an opportunity for our nation to come together as one and to support our Dear Liar Dear Leader Esteemed President as he outlines his agenda to transform America in the coming year.

Short of the Super Bowl (Go Broncos!), the Winter Olympics, and the new season of Duck Dynasty, no other mid-winter telecast is anticipated to have a higher viewer participation.

Unfortunately, all of our staff are currently in New Jersey covering Super Bowl Week, and unless the speech is shown in nearby Midtown Manhattan discos or downstate in Atlantic City casinos, there may not be an opportunity for the Pundit Pete Press Service to cover the speech.

Which is why we are asking our loyal readers to:
Help Us Out and Accept On Our Reader Challenge!

You see, the PPPS staff are currently compiling a book documenting President Obama's most profound promises, proclamations and pronouncements. The book will be titled When a President Speaks the Truth.

Unfortunately, so far, it consists mostly of blank pages.

Which is where you, our readers, come in. We need more content for our book and here is how you can help:

  1. Find a comfortable place in front of a television.
  2. Invite lots of friends.
  3. Give everyone a note pad (digital is OK) and pencil.
  4. Watch the State of the Union Speech.
  5. Note ANY truthful statements by the President.
  6. Send us your notes in the comment section below...
  7. Or tweet us @Pundit_Pete
Thanks for your help!

Celebrating Reverend King's Legacy

American Conservatives of Color at Marade, 2013
PPPS (Denver)—As we post this message, thousands are marching in Denver's annual Marade, the largest parade and celebration of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday held anywhere in the country. And we are reminded how far this country has come in realizing Reverend King's dream.

Thank you Reverend King for your courage, your conviction, your sacrifice, your vision and your dedication to follow God's will as you helped to truly transform America. May we all strive to fully realize your dream.

Here's a start.
