The Week In Tweets

PPPS (Littleton)—Given the warm spring weather here in Colorado, and the noticeable absence of staff on Friday, we decided sum up the week's news with tweets.

Last week ended, and this week began, with an awkward video and a recorded conversation, both of which touched upon the subject of race. Reactions were swift in the national media and from certain sectors of society, such as the long abused millionares in the National Basketball Association.

Of course, being the end of the month, economic news was bound to work its way into the national conversation. The news was not good.

On Wednesday, it was revealed that first quarter 2014 GDP growth was a pitiful 0.1 percent, and on Friday, employment figures indicated the worst labor participation rate since 1978. 
However, even in the midst of disappointing news, there is usually a bright spot.

A few news organizations tried to raise questions about a certain memo associated with a big non-story, which had long ago been put to bed. It caused a minor stir in the White House Press Room and the most uncomfortable few minutes for Press Secretary Jay Carney since the last time Citizen Pete was there.

But, the issue was quickly resolved, as indicated by this tweet.


As the week ended, there were rumors that the Republicans, in a desperate attempt to keep the Benghazi story alive, were going to commission some sort of investigation.

We are confident, however, that next week, the news will return to more comfortable subjects like Obamacare and politics, as evidenced by this end-of-week tweet.

Oops, He Did It Again - Pete Poses Tough Obamacare Question to Jay Carney

PPPS (Washington, DC)—Once again, Citizen Pete, posing as Chief White House Correspondent Political-Beat Pete, asked a tough Obamacare question to White House Press Secretary Jay Carney at the end of yesterday's White House Press Briefing.



This was not Pete's first time at the press briefing rodeo, having visited almost one year ago to ask Secretary Carney about the president's lavish vacations at taxpayer expense.

But this time, Pete asked about something a little more personal, the Affordable Care Act. Pete's wife, Citizen Caryn, had her health insurance policy canceled because of the law, and in order to avoid the security risks associated with the Obamacare exchanges, and find a plan in which she could still keep he doctor of many years, she now pays about double her previous premium. If it were not for the extra $3,600 per year out of the family budget due to Obamacare, Pete might make more frequent trips to the White House press room.

Here is the transcript:
White House Press Briefing: March 10, 2014

PETE:    Jay, one more question from Colorado?MR. CARNEY:  Colorado, what do you got?
PETE:   Okay.  I just wanted to follow up on that one about Obama -- well, the Affordable Care Act.  And you mentioned that the Republicans are giving this pitch to, I guess, repeal the bill.  And so my question --
MR. CARNEY:  Surely your reporting reflects that.
PETE:  What’s that?
MR. CARNEY:  I’m not misstating --
PETE:  No, no, no, it was the reasons you gave that I wanted to ask you about.  And the last time I was here, I asked you a question and you didn’t really answer it, so I hope I’ll have better luck this time.  (Laughter.) 
MR. CARNEY:  I think he’s waiting for his -- have you got the camera on him?  Go ahead.
PETE: And I saw you using notes, so I’m going to use mine as well.
MR. CARNEY:  Go for it.
PETE:   When the law was first debated and passed -- and we’re talking about the Affordable Care Act -- the polls showed a majority of the people were not in favor of that, and yet it was pushed through.  And so in terms of this pitch, the President continued to pitch to get it passed using statements like “you can keep your plan.”  And, by the way, I know that’s not true because my wife lost her insurance because of the Affordable Care Act -- that you can --
MR. CARNEY:  What’s your question, sir?
PETE:  Well, I’m getting to it. 
MR. CARNEY:  Okay.
PETE:  We don't get here very often from out in middle country, so when you get your chance, you got to ask.
MR. CARNEY:  You’re welcome.  Sure.
PETE:  Okay.  So anyway, the President’s pitch was that you can keep your plan, that your costs will go down, and I know that not to be true.  So my question is:  Will the President accede to the greater majority of Americans now who want it repealed?
MR. CARNEY:  Well, actually that's not --
PETE:  Why won’t he listen to the American people?
MR. CARNEY:  You obviously haven’t seen the data because the majority of Americans do not in any poll want it repealed.  The majority supports fixing it and improving it, not repealing it.  I would ask you to check your data.
Secondly, the President made that pitch.  Republicans in Congress fought it tooth and nail.  It went to the Supreme Court.  The Supreme Court upheld it.  It was the principal argument in a presidential election.  The President won reelection.
And again, Republicans are free to make the repeal argument. My point was simply that when you go to individuals and you ask them, do you want quality, affordable health insurance, or do you want the insurance company to tell you that you’re not going to get coverage for that condition you have because the fine print says you can't.  In fact, your sister, we’re going to charge her double even though you have identical medical histories because she’s a woman --
PETE:  Well, my wife is getting charged double now because she lost her insurance.
MR. CARNEY:  Well, again, I don't know the circumstances with your wife.  And what I can tell you is that the Affordable Care Act provides quality, affordable health insurance to millions of people.  They are -- million are --
PETE:  But that's not true.  More people have lost their insurance because of the act right now than have been -- didn't have insurance and have signed up.  That is a fact.
MR. CARNEY:  Okay, well, you’re entitled to your facts, sir. What I can tell you is that you and others who want to campaign on repeal are welcome to.
What I’m saying is that repeal for millions of Americans is not a good option and for all the reasons that I enumerated.

PPPS (National Harbor, MD)--Governor Sarah Palin woke up some sleepy conservatives yesterday, even as she told a bedtime story to close out the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

Her speech was peppered with great Palin-style one-liners, and perhaps a smidgeon of sarcasm, as she brought the audience repeatedly to their feet.

Recalling Senator Ted Cruz's reading to his daughters on the Senate floor from Dr. Zeus' Green Eggs and Ham, Palin added a few new verses:

I do not like this Uncle Sam.
I do not like his healthcare scam.

I do not like these dirty crooks,
or how they lie and cook the books.

I do not like when Congress steals.
I do not like their crony deals.

I do not like this spy'n man.
I do not like 'Oh yes we can.'

I do not like this spending spree.
We're smart. We know.  There's nothing free.

I do not like reporters' smug replies,
when I complain about their lies.

I do not like this kind of hope.

After referring to President Obama's remaining time in office as "the end of an error," Palin said he is now the "lamest of lame ducks."

She then went on to lambast President Obama for his "wobbly" and weak foreign policy, in particular towards Russia and President Vladimir Putin's expansionist incursion into Ukraine. But then, she quickly apologized, stating "I'm sorry. But really, I'm probably being too hard on the President. After all, who could'a seen this coming?"

But Palin's pokes were not exclusively reserved for Obama and other Democrats. Speaking of the 2010 election, which brought the Republicans back to power in the House of Representatives and in state legislatures and governors' mansions across the land, Palin reminded some in the GOP establishment that "you didn't build that........the Tea Party did!" and implied that the broom that will be sweeping in 2014 may pick up some dust on both sides of the aisle.

It was a memorable speech, and we have to admit that we caught some of the normally fair, balanced and objective PPPS staff applauding or standing at times.

PPPS (Littleton)—The Pundit Pete blog reached an historic milestone today, surpassing 100,000 total page views. 

Our CEO and dear leader, Pundit Pete, offered to personally escort the lucky 100,000th visitor and a guest on an all-expenses-paid trip to Hawaii.

Unfortunately, our social media director, #PoundSign Pete, dozed off at the exact moment the ticker turned over, and we were unable to identify the lucky visitor.

Tea Party Launched On This Day Five Years Ago

PPPS (Littleton)—Our loyal reader Citizen Pete, reminded us that it was on this day, February 19, five years ago, the Tea Party movement was launched with an on-air rant from Rick Santelli.

Citizen Pete also reminded us that the Tea Party movement was initially a response to President Obama's first major legislative initiative, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act or "Stimulus Bill", which was passed by Congress on February 13, 2009 after only being available for review by American citizens for a few hours in the middle of the night.

The bill was quickly dubbed the "Porkulus Bill" by citizen activists and a protest was organized in Seattle on February 16, 2009 by a local blogger named Liberty Bell. The protest was promoted nationally by Michelle Malkin and a follow-up protest was quickly organized to coincide with President Obama's visit to Denver to formally sign the Stimulus Bill on February 17, 2009. Citizen Pete got to that protest in Denver just as it was ending, and vowed to come back if there was ever another.

And the rest is history, except for the part that is yet to be written.

President Obama's New Plan For Governing

PPPS (Washington)—On Tuesday, during his State of the Union speech before a joint session of Congress and a vast television audience of subjects throughout the country, President Obama articulated a new plan for governing during the upcoming "2014 Year of Action".

Our Chief White House Correspondent, Political-Beat Pete, who attended the State of the Union speech as a guest of former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, summed up the president's plan succinctly:

State of the Union - When A President Speaks The Truth

PPPS (Washington)—In the daily life of our nation, no speech is more consequential, more riveting, or more hopeful than when our president goes before Congress and the American people to report on the State of the Union. It is truly an opportunity for our nation to come together as one and to support our Dear Liar Dear Leader Esteemed President as he outlines his agenda to transform America in the coming year.

Short of the Super Bowl (Go Broncos!), the Winter Olympics, and the new season of Duck Dynasty, no other mid-winter telecast is anticipated to have a higher viewer participation. 

Unfortunately, all of our staff are currently in New Jersey covering Super Bowl Week, and unless the speech is shown in nearby Midtown Manhattan discos or downstate in Atlantic City casinos, there may not be an opportunity for the Pundit Pete Press Service to cover the speech.

I'm one of those Americans who has received a cancellation letter from my insurance company because of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare. I bought my policy when I was laid off in 2011. Now, my premiums and deductible will go up when I can least afford it, and I'll probably be unable to keep the doctor I've had for over 25 years.

It's as if we were living happily in the Shire, able to buy health insurance in a free market, and to work and  play outside the control of anyone but ourselves. But, the Eye of Sauron — an ever-growing government — was upon us, and it wanted our liberties. It devised to take them through one ring of power: Obamacare.

So, we picked up this ring of power and put it on a chain and set out together to take it to Mordor to destroy it, but certain good-but-misguided people wanted to take the ring from us and wear it for themselves and prevent us from throwing it into the fires inside of Mt. Doom and they allowed the healthcare law to come into effect and stopped us on my journey . . . .

Pardon me, I digress.

This isn't the Shire and I'm not Frodo.  I'm a woman living in the suburbs in Colorado, an unemployed woman, and, Obamacare is not the ring of power of the president, and his Precious.  Or, is it? Come to think of it, the president did lie to me about it, repeatedly. And, the Democrats were very sneaky in the way they passed it into law, and they keep insisting it's the law of the land and they tell us to leave it alone, because they won . . . .

Sorry, got carried away.

We did have the freedom to choose insurance on a free market, though, and most of us were able to afford it with a little fancy dancing. Now, the government's power move into our healthcare will cause use to pay for insurance policies that don't fit and are far too expensive for us. And, many of us are still out of work and our job searching is being made even harder by Obamacare.

It was already plenty hard for me, as it is for many women in their 50s. Fortunately for me and my family, my husband has a good job and we are hanging on in the middle class, even though our family budget has been cut by about 30 percent. Sadly, I was counting on this decade to be the time when I'd be able to sock away money for retirement and pay off the debt we incurred raising our kids. Nope, not happening.

On Saturday, November 9, 2013, Jonathan Hoenig said it this way on Cashin' In: "In a free market, you actually have to earn business through years of competence, successful dealings, and success.  And this is the fundamental difference between economic power like Walmart, which succeeds through trade,  and political power, which is Obamacare, which only works because of a government gun.  Obamacare is a gun brought to health care."

As government brought this weapon into our lives, I was hopeful that the US Supreme Court would protect us by ruling that the individual mandate in the law was unconstitutional, but that didn't happen. The Court affirmed the government's right to meddle in my economy under its taxing duties.  This was a big shock and disappointment.

We found out that Saruman was not a good wizard at all; he was in league with Sauron.
So, the president's  healthcare law, which was passed along party lines with Democrats voting for it and Republicans voting against it, is being rolled out. And, the people who are rolling it out are trying to silence our political speech by calling us names and mocking us.

This is nothing new for me when it comes to Obamacare.  In August 2009, when Congress was working to pass Obamacare, I went to North High School in Denver—where my grandmother had attended—with a sign because a rally would be there for the president's health care legislation. Serendipitously, I ended up where all the supporters of Obamacare entered a fenced area. I stood on the sidewalk next to the gate with a sign that read, "Yes, we can . . . do better than Obamacare. Go back to the drawing board. Plz!"

Obama supporters then tried everything to get rid of me, including sending a lawyer out to threaten me and to bring the police. The police came, looked at me, rolled their eyes and went away, leaving me standing on the sidewalk with my sign.

I expect Obama supporters will continue to try and silence my political speech in the future. I can deal with that. I am more concerned about them using the IRS to target me, because we've seen them do that . Nevertheless, I'm all in to destroy this ring of power with my grassroots friends. I have faith in the Lord.

Gandalf will help when all seems lost. He will call the eagles to come and lift us out of danger.

Afterall, who am we?  Well, I can tell you, I'm just a humble citizen, someone who's been a family caregiver for years—for children and seniors—and who has always worked, either in part-time or full-time staff positions or as a freelancer or self-employed writer and editor. I'm a responsible citizen who pays the mortgage and the bills, and who has volunteered for church, schools and community consistently over the years.

Once, I was a "bleeding heart liberal" but  I moved to the center and to center right and then joined the Tea Party. How did that happen? The events of the Great Recession accelerated the transformation in me. My husband and I stood up because we could see our liberties —and those of our children —were in jeopardy.  

And, even though we are mere members of the middle class we do help the poor, dear leaders.  If you'd just asked us nicely, we would have helped more. Maybe the government could have put a box to check on the IRS forms  and we could have donated some amount to cover health insurance for the poor.
 
We could have taken a much simpler route to help our brethren in the Shire, but we didn't because Sauron wanted power and control more than anything.

So,  let's  create a cancellation letter for Obamacare.  Let's throw Obama's Precious into the fire. Then, we can restore economic and political liberty to the People, and return to the Shire.
